Mercer Island Library Early Learning Garden

Turning an unused space outside a public library into a unique place of discovery for children and parents
COMPLETED!
Mercer Island Library Early Learning Garden
Mercer Island, WA
NEED: How do we connect learning and nature, inside and outside, young and old at a library? That’s the question community leaders and the Mercer Island Library asked as we entered into this project. The community wanted an invigorating space for that parents and kids could explore to enhance their library experience, expanding it to the outdoor spaces.
SOLUTION: The Mercer Island Library Early Learning Garden design inspires discovery and curiosity, uses sustainable practices, connects the library to surrounding spaces, and is accessible for all patrons.
Through the use of all different sorts of materials – rebar, concrete tiles, clay, dogwood twigs, painted banners, cedar and rock – the garden support various learning styles through sensory exploration, intimate reading spaces, and a gathering space for storytelling, programs and the enjoyment of nature.
We built for four days to complete this project – and at 3pm on the fourth day we had music and stories in the newly built reading circle! What a great way to start using this place for community and learning and children.
WHAT’S NEXT: Celebrate this project at the grand opening on Saturday, September 17, 10:30am.
